Spectators expecting a parade of beautiful women at tonight's Miss Methven pageant are in for a shock.A dozen of the Canterbury town's men will put their bodies on the line by donning women's clothing for the sold-out Our Lady of the Snows School fundraiser.
Organiser Cath Roderick said the "willing" contestants had put a lot of effort into their costumes.
The judges would be looking for poise, appearance and personality, she said.
"The local beauticians have been very busy this week. There's been quite a few complete body waxes and tanning sessions," Roderick said.
"I'm a bit surprised at how much they're willing to put themselves through. It's quite amazing."
Contestant Steve Ling, a Methven retailer, said he was happy to dress up to support the school.
"What guy would turn down the opportunity to dress up in women's clothing, slip on some sturdy heels and strut his stuff in front of an audience?" he said. "I'm wishing I spent more time at the gym to boost my pecs."
Roderick said this year's pageant was the first since the inaugural event in 2005.
"You're always looking for an idea that catches people's imaginations and their wallets, and it was very successful,"she said.
She hoped more than $10,000 would be raised.
Most contestants were keen to keep their costumes under wraps until the show.
"But from what I've heard there's been a lot of time, effort and creativity go into them."
