Huy Trong Luong, 41, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Jerome Simandle, who also ordered Luong to pay $39,000 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release upon completion of his prison term, acting U.S. Attorney Ralph Marra announced Thursday.
Dressed as a woman, Luong robbed $2,000 from a Wachovia Bank in Old Greenwich on Jan. 11, 2008, $2,000 from a Commerce Bank in Westport on Jan. 13, 2008, and $3,600 from a Commerce Bank in New Canaan on April 20, 2008.
After pleading guilty in March to the Greenwich robbery and another robbery in Bergenfield, N.J., Luong admitted he robbed seven other banks. His admission was taken into account during his sentencing.
In each of the robberies that took place between January and May of 2008, Luong disguised himself as a woman, according to the criminal complaint. Though he was indicted in Connecticut for the three New England robberies, all his cases were consolidated in New Jersey.
Wearing bright red lipstick, Luong was caught during an attempted robbery at a Commerce Bank in Chatham, N.J., on May 5, 2008.
Inside his getaway minivan, police found a black wig, a black Dolce & Gabbanna hat, a woman's
makeup kit and a black jacket.
At the time of his arrest, law enforcement officers recovered cash and a hoax bomb that appeared to be dynamite but turned out to be three Roman candle fireworks wrapped together.
During the bank robberies, Luong passed a note to tellers saying that he had a bomb and would detonate it if they did not meet his demands.
The other New Jersey banks Luong robbed were in Bergenfield, Toms River, Highland Park, Stafford Township and Mahwah.
