Marks & Spencer opened its three-day Penny Bazaar to celebrate its 125th birthday today with 20 products which can be bought for just 1penny.
M&S, which cut its dividend to shareholders yesterday after revealing a 40% fall in profits, said the bazaars will take place at 300 stores.
Customers will be limited to five items each, but crushes are expected and extra security guards have been hired.
Items on offer (see below) include jewellery sets, scarves, purses and underwear as well as cufflinks, ties and socks. Veteran supermodel Twiggy, who fronts M&S's advertising campaigns, will open the bazaar at the company's flagship store in Oxford Street, London.
The sale is based on the slogan used by founder Michael Marks in 1884: 'Don't ask the price. It's a penny.'
M&S chairman Sir Stuart Rose said: 'M&S has been at the heart of Britain for 125 years and we believe that this is something worth celebrating. It has been a tough year for us all but people are fed up with being fed up and we wanted to give our customers a real treat.'
Rose yesterday reported sales for the last financial year down 5.9%. Heavy discounting and price cuts on food also hit profits, which fell from £1bn to £604.4m.

Actually it was a waste of time from what I hear. There was just a limited amount of items which were quickly snapped up by early queuers. So it was just a cheap publicity stunt by a store thats lost its market share for being too expensive and run by a board who don't have a clue. Why 125 years? why not 124. I'm slowly becoming anti Marks and Spencers for being disrepectful and thinking people are so gullible.
