Barefoot panty thief slips on slippers

KAGOSHIMA -- A thief who accidentally left his slippers behind at a residence from which he stole women's underwear was apprehended after he broke into the home again to retrieve them, police said.
The apprehended man, Ichiro Shinchi, 54, was arrested for illegal entry into a residence.
Investigators said Shinchi broke into the home of a teacher in Kagoshima at about 11 p.m. on June 10. The teacher's 56-year-old wife, who was in the bathroom brushing her teeth at the time let out a scream when she saw him, and he fled.

Later Shinchi realized that he had left the slippers he was wearing in the garden of the home, so at about 1 a.m. the following morning he broke in again.
The woman's son, who was waiting, pounced on him and apprehended him. Police who were called to the scene immediately arrested him, according to a Jiji Press report.

It was later learned that Shinchi had stolen underwear belonging to the wife, and police referred him to prosecutors over the theft. Shinchi reportedly admitted to police that he had already broken into the home over 10 times and police are investigating his statements.

"I got worried that the slippers would lead to me being caught, so I went back to get them," police quoted Shinchi as saying.
On the night of the break-in, a typhoon had brought heavy rain and strong winds into the area.

"Maybe he couldn't face walking home barefoot in the heavy rain," a Kagoshima Minami Police Station official commenting on the case said.
