Cop 'investigating' woman's apartment admits to panty raid
KOFU -- A veteran police inspector under arrest for breaking into a woman's apartment has confessed that he wanted to "take a look at her underwear," police officials have said.
Mamoru Sueki, 50, of the Kofu Police Station initially denied breaking into the apartment when arrested Tuesday, saying that he was just there for a "preliminary inspection" before formally investigating whether illegal foreign residents were staying there.
But he owned up to the break-in into the apartment of a 47-year-old woman in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture shortly after midnight Monday.
"I wanted to see a woman's underwear," officers quoted Sueki as saying. "I want her to know I am sorry."
Because a closet in the apartment had been ransacked, officers plan to further question Sueki on suspicion of attempted theft.
They said that the woman's 19-year-old son, who lives in an apartment next door, spotted Sueki in his mother's room and had another neighbor alert police. The woman was out at the time.
