A man caught wandering around Hornsby wearing female clothing has been questioned by police hunting a sexual predator who strikes scantily clad in women's clothes.

Police say the 34-year-old Asquith man voluntarily submitted to a DNA test after being questioned by detectives about 10.30pm yesterday after a witness reported him to police.

Detective Inspector Michael Banfield said the man was wearing short pants, knee-high boots, a black jacket and a reddish-brown wig when he was approached by patrolling police officers on Forbes Street.

He was later released and "no charges are likely at this stage", Detective Inspector Banfield said.

Police have been waiting for a break in the case of three women who reported being attacked and sexually assaulted in the Hornsby area by a man wearing women's clothing.

A 29-year-old woman was raped by a man wearing a black bra and black lacy panties in the same area on July 29 last year, another woman was sexually assaulted by a man wearing a pink bikini top and yellow bikini bottoms on October 20, and a 23-year-old woman was indecently assaulted 10 days later as she walked along Bellbrook Avenue.

A fourth woman aged 18 escaped unharmed after being approached by a man wearing high heels, a wig and make-up on the corner of Balmoral and Burdett streets this month.

A police spokeswoman said the man questioned last night matched the description of the predator given by the women attacked in the past year.

But Detective Inspector Banfield said police were renewing their appeal for public information to catch the man responsible for the attacks.

"It's safe to say it doesn't seem normal to you and I but there's a society of men out there who dress up in women's clothing, and it's their right to do so," he said.

"'[The 34-year-old] wasn't committing any offence.

"At this stage there's nothing to say he is the offender but inquiries are continuing to eliminate him as a suspect.

"We are asking the public to remain vigilant, particularly if males are seen cross-dressing in this area."
