GUATEMALA CITY (AP) - Authorities were investigating whether police were behind an attack that left a Guatemalan transvestite dead and another seriously wounded, police said Sunday.
The two were shot early Saturday in central Guatemala City, in an area frequented by prostitutes and their clients. Juan Pablo Mendez, 22, died in a local hospital on Saturday afternoon. The other victim, whose name has not been revealed, was in serious condition.
Members of the Oasis gay and lesbian rights group said the attackers wore police uniforms.
"We're investigating whether (the attackers) were police and if that is the case, they will be captured," Guatemala City Police Chief Erwin Sperissen told The Associated Press.
Oasis said seven of its members have died under violent circumstances this year.
